Tour leader, Uncle Brian Coghill, is not only knowledgeable in the ways of his ancestors; Uncle Brian also has a degree in Environmental Management. So the information he presents on this journey to the coast, dunes, lakes, and forests of North Stradbroke Island combines both Aboriginal Lore (stories) and Law (rules for behaviour) and Western science. On our tour we learned about: •The concept of ‘Country’, which is more than a place where people live; it’s a sentient being that requires people to care for all nature in accordance with traditional Laws; •yurees—the animal and plant totems handed down from ancestors to modern descendants—and how these yurees provide a kinship connection between people, and between people and Country; •named places in the landscape, with each named place having its own management system; •names of plants, especially flowers, and how flowering plants were used—and still are used—for weddings, birthdays, and funerals; •Lore—the stories of the actions of Creator Beings and old ancestors—and how Lore informs how people still live on Country today; •And much, much more. Uncle Brian has a comfortable vehicle, and is a safe and careful driver. We visited beautiful places, like Bummiera (Brown Lake); Nullumbah (Point Lookout); a high dune with a lookout across Moreton Bay; and the Back Beach, where whales can be seen breaching at the right season, and people once gathered plants and shellfish as part of their subsistence economy. We learned so much from Uncle Brian on our tour. We felt physically and culturally safe in Uncle Brian’s capable hands. We now understand why Country and ecosystems are part of Aboriginal culture. This is a tour that every Australian should attend.
